It has been a very busy day (like usual) in college football. Here’s all the last minute news from today:
- Tennessee offensive lineman Ja’Waun James will likely miss the rest of the spring after coming down with Mono.
- Ohio State assistant coach Luke Fickell will take over for Jim Tressel while Tressel serves his five game suspension next season. Fickell has been promoted to assistant coach but will remain the Buckeyes defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.
- Rutgers has moved leading rusher Jordan Thomas from running back to cornerback. Thomas ran for 417 yards on 95 carries and one touchdown last season.
- USC safety Jawanza Starling has been one of the standouts at the Trojans spring practice and could be playing himself back into the starting lineup.
- California’s quarterback battle is expected to be cut down to four quarterbacks at the end of Thursday’s practice. The four guys expected to make the cut are Brock Mansion, Beau Sweeney, Zach Maynard and Allan Bridgford.
- Last season, Kansas running backs James Sims started as a freshman. He ran for 742 yards and nine touchdowns, but may not be the starter this season. Jayhawks coach Turner Gill believes he has five good running backs and is planning on giving all five a chance of winning the starting job.
- Speaking of Kansas, who is going to be the Jayhawks quarterback? With Kale Pick moved to receiver, Jordan Webb and Quinn Mecham will compete for the spot this spring. Highly touted freshman Brock Berglund will come in in the fall and will have a shot to steal the job from whoever wins it.
- Connecticut wide receiver Isiah Moore has been suspended indefinitely for breaking a team rule. Last season he caught 15 passes.
- Clemson DE Kourtnei Brown will miss the rest of spring practice after injuring his knee.
- According to CollegeFootballTalk, West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith is a go for spring practice. Smith’s status was left in doubt after having surgery in January to repair a stress fracture in his foot, but CFT is saying he is good to go.
- Florida freshman RB Mack Brown broke his fibula last week and will miss about three months. The Gators only have one scholarship running back participating in spring practice (Chris Rainey) because Jeff Demps is running track. Florida head coach Will Muschamp still expects Demps to win the starting job, although Rainey has been very impressive this spring.
